THE   PRIZE   RING.

1719—Figg, first champion of the English prize ring,
opened a "theatre" in Oxford road, London, where the
SAVord and single stick, and occasionally the fists, Avere
royally patronized.   He died In 1734.

1730—Pipes and Greeting, respectively, succeeded to
the championship of England.

1734—George Taylor became champion of England.

1740—Jack Broughton beat G. Taylor, championship.

1750—April 10—Jack Slack beat J."^Broughton in Figg's
Theatre, championship—London, Eng.

1760—June 17—W. Stevens beat J. Slack, champion¬
ship. Tennis Court—London, Eng.

1761—March 2—G. Meggs beat W. Stevens, champion¬

1805—Oct. 8—Harry Pearce beat John GuUey, 1,000
guineas, 64 rounds, Ih. 17m.—Hailsham, Eng.

1805—Dec. 6—H. Pearce beat J. Belcher, champion¬
ship, 500 guineas, 18 rounds, 35m.—Blythe, Eng. Pearce,
Avho Avas never beaten, gave up the title in 1808, and died
April 3, 1809.

1809—Feb. 1—Tom Cribb beat J. Belcher, champion¬
ship, £400, 35 rounds, 41m.—Epson DoAvns, Eng. He after¬
Avards beat Mollneaux, the black, twice, and retired after
holding the championship fifteen years. Died, Woolwich,
May 11, 1848.

l'814—Sept. 14—Dan Donnelly, champion of Ireland,
beat G. Cooper, 60 guineas, 11 rounds, 22m.—Curragh of
Kildare, Ire.

1816—First ring fight in America, betAveen Jacob Hyer
(father of Tom) and Tom Beasley.   No particulars.

1819—July 21—Dan Donnelly beat Tom Oliver, 100

1835—Peb.—George Kensett gave an exhibition of the
art of self-defense, Avith the assistance of amateurs—
Shakespeare Building, Sixth and Chestnut Streets, Phila¬
delphia.   Died, Ford'ham, N. Y,, Oct. 31, 1856.

1835—July 19—Jim Ward beat T. Cannon, £1,000, ten
rounds., Warwick, Eng., and was recognized as champion
of England.

1833—December — John   Gulley,  Avho  defeated   Bob
Gregson in the prize ring twice, and declined the title of
champion, elected member of Parliament for Pontefract.
1833—Deaf Burke claimed tne championship of Eng¬
land upon Ward's retirement.

1839—Feb. 12 —W. Thompson (Bendigo) beat Deaf
Burke, 10 rounds, 24m.—Heather, Eng.

1840—Jan. 9—British Pugilistic Association founded at
the Castle Tavern; Tom Spring installed as Master of
Ceremonies—London, Eng.

1841—May 11—Ben Gaunt beat Nick Ward, £200, 35
rounds, 47m.—Long Marsden, Eng. Gaunt was recognized
as champion.   Died Sept. 10, 1861.

1841—Sept 9—Tom Hyer beat J. McCIeester (Country
McClusky), 101 rounds, 2h. 55m.—CaldAvell's Landing, N.Y.

184S—Dec. 14, 16, 20—Charley Freeman, American
giant (Oft. 10>^in.), beat W. Perry, the "Tipton Slasher,'^
108 rounds, 2h. 3m.; three rings, last near Gravesend, Eng.
Freeman died at London, Oct. 18, 1845, aged 28. Monu¬
ment erected to his memory by J. C. Heenan, 1860.

1844—April-Harry Josiah Holt pugUist, known as the
"Cicero of the Ring," died—England.

1845—Sept. 9—Bendigo beat Ben Gaunt, £400 and
championship, 93 rounds, 2h. 10m.—Sutfield Green, Eng.

1849—Feb. 7—Tom Hyer beat Yankee Sullivan, $10,000
—Rock Point, Md. Hyer died. New York, June 26, 1864,
aged 45; buried 28, Greenwood Cemetery. Sullivan died
at San Francisco, Cal., May 31,1856, aged 43. Monument
erected to his memory by James MuUoy, Mission Dolores.
1849—Aug. 3—Pierce Egan, pugilistic reporter for
BeWs Life and author of "Boxiana," died, aged 77 years—
London, Eng.

1850—Dec. 17—W. Perry, the "Tipton Slasher," beat
Tom Paddock, £200, 27 rounds, 42m., and claimed the
championship.

1851—Sept. 29—Harry Broome beat W, Perry, £400 and
championship, 15 rounds, 33m.—Mildenhall, Eng. Broome
died Nov. 2, 1865.

1853—Jan. 26—Wm. Hastings ("DubUn Tricks") beat
Orville Gardner, 17 rounds, 29m.—Paterson, N. J. Hast¬
ings died a wealthy man in January, 1890. Gardner be¬
came an evangelist, and now resides in New Jersey.

1853—Aug. 31—John Morrissey beat George Thompson
(Bob McLaren), $4,000,11 rounds, 16m.—Mare Island, Cal.
1853—September—Pugilistic Benevolent Association
organized, for the purpose of assisting deserving pugilists
in distress and keeping the ring at prize fights—London.
1853—Oct. 12—John Morrissey beat Yankee Sullivan,
$2,000, 37 rounds—Boston Corners.

1853—Oct. 18—Nat Langham beat Tom Sayers, £200—
Lakenheath, Eng. Langham died, London, Sept. 1, 1871,
aged 51.
