Prefatory Note
It has been deemed fitting in commemoration of the one-
hundredth anniversary of Peter Cooper's birth, to narrate
briefly in the follow^ing pages, the story of his noble life.
Some future biographer, recognizing the grandeur oi thnt
life, will erect a worthy moiiLament, but this slight memorial
is the production <^( men and women who have enjoyed the
privileges of Mr. Cooper's most useful foundation — it is the
tribute of gratitude to his memory.
Thanks are due to those who have facib'tpted access to
books and papers, and to those who have given other assis¬
tance and advice.
