FOREWORD

At first thought, an Alumni Directory may seem as impersonal as a
Telephone Book, merely a listing of names and addresses for ready refer¬
ence. Actually, with some exceptions, each of the thousands of entries
which make up this volume represents the life and labor of a man or
woman in one or another of the ministries of the Church of Christ through¬
out the world.

Those who have prepared this Directory and we who shall use it are
vividly alive to this fact. It will serve not only as a guide to the present
location and occupation of each alumnus but also as a reminder of the
person whom we knew years ago within the halls of Union Seminary and a
recapitulation of the places and tasks which have claimed his devotion
over the years since graduation. Therefore, I am happy to seize this occa¬
sion to send greetings to each member of the larger Community of Union
Seminary, scattered in every corner of the earth in the most diverse under¬
takings which together make up the fullness of the service of Christ in
our day.

May the pages of this volume come to life for all who use it as a com¬
posite record of corporate service in a single great Cause. May it bring
challenging and inspiring illumination as to the reach and variety of that
service. May it rekindle awareness of the ties which unite those whose
biographies are here recorded in common loyalty to the Institution which
prepared them for their several ministries, to the ideals of "solid learning,
true piety and enlightened experience" which guided their preparation at
Union Seminary, and above all to the Church and its Master to whose
service our lives are committed.
