[Orders concerning Printing.]

1 ffyrst that no formes of letters be kept standinge to the preiudice of
Woorkemen at any tyme
2 Secondly that no booke to be printed excede the number of 1250 or 1500
at one ympression except any book whatsoeuer of the non pareiUe letter
[i, e* size of type] and the brevier letter, and also except iiij ympressions
yerely of the grammer and lykwise iiij ympressions yerely of the Accidence
seuerall[y] in 4*^ or 8^® and also all prymers and Catechisms, and that
euery of th[e]impressions of grammers Accidences prymers and CatecMsmes
and of all bookes of the none pareill letter and brevier letter be not aboue
2500 or 3000 at the most and except also the statutes and proclamacons
with all other bookes belonginge to ye office of her maiesties printer which
by reason of her maiesties affayres are to be limited to no numbers. And
except all Calenders printed Red and black and also except all Almanackes
and prognostications
3 Thirdly that no Apprentise nowe beinge be employed either in composing
or woorkinge at the presse while any -woorkman prynter hable to discharge
suche woork and reasonably requiring the same (and beinge of honest and
good behaviour) shall want woork. Kor that hereafter (the yeres of theise
beinge expired) any more Apprentises be into any printinge house taken
other then according to ye meaninge of ye Decree made in the Starrchamber
bearinge date the 23 Day of June [1586] in ye xxviij*^ yere of the reign of
the Queues maiestye that nowe is. And that if any woorkman shall over
hardly behaue him self either in his woork or in Demaunding of wages That
then the controuersie to be decided by ye ]\Iaster. wardens, and assistentes
of the Company of Staconers of London or any other by their appointment
4. Neuertheles yf any IVTaster Printer supplyinge the place of A Journeman
shall at any tyme hereafter haue occasion of busynes or any other ympedy-
ment That then yt shalbe Lawfull for the prentyce of suche IMaster Prynter
to Woork in his maysters place duringe suche tyme as his master shall not
in his own person ymploy hym self and his own personal! woork in
printing.
.5. And lastly that yf it shall happen at any tyme hereafter the copy \i. e. a
publication enjoying what was then roughly equivalent to our existing copyright
protection'] of any man to be out of prynt and that after warninge shalbe
gyven him and registred in the hall book at a Court of Assistentes for the
reprynting thereof, the owner of the same doo not within Sixe monethes
(after suche warning and regestring in the said book) reprynt or begyn to
reprynt the same and precede orderly with the ympression to ye linishyng
thereof / as he conveniently may so that the Aucthor of any suche copy be no
hinderance therevnto That then it shalbe Laufull for the Journemen of the
said Company to cause and gett any suche book or copy to be printed to ye
vse of ye Company during ye Impression then to be printed of ye same
copy. Savinge and alowinge to the owner of the copie a ratable parte with
them in ye same Impression in proffitt and charge as yt shall fall out to euery
seuerall partener in euery suche Impression According to the order and
discretion of the JMaster. and Wardens of the Company for the tyme
beynge
