BIBLIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY
OF
ENGLISH LITERATURE.
1553-1640 A.D.
N.B.—The primary object of this Summary is to get (as far as the very limited space will allow) a dated List of all the Printers
and Publishers in the British Isles during the period; and also of many of those Continental Printers and Publishers who, during
these years, either produced English books, or Works in any other language relating to, or by natives of, England, Wales, Scotland,
and Ireland.
There is abundant evidence in the previous Volumes of this Transcript dec. that many of the London Stationers, who were
Booksellers by trade, continued simply to sell books long after they disappear from this Bibliographical Summary as Printers or
Publishers ; as in the case of NICHOLAS WYER, whose last entry as a Publisher is in 1566, at v. 59 ; but who is recorded as
selling books down to 15*77,'at i. 111.
Those London Publishers who are known to have been also Printers at the time have an asterisk (*) before their names,
as I. D.—*J. Day.
It will be borne in mind that the Titles are, of necessity, greatly abridged ; but they will be found amply sufficient in
conjunction with (1) the names of Author and Editor or Translator, (2) those of Printer and Publisher, (3) the date, and (4) the
size, to identify any edition.
