PREFACE.

The intention which guided the subscriber in compiling this
Index, was to prepare a key for obtaining from the records in the
Register's Office such information as migh be gained from ex¬
amination of maps of property in the City of New-York, and the
documents referring to these maps, on file or recorded in said
office.

The Index of Maps compiled by the subscriber, describing
several thousand maps, covering almost every square foot of
ground on Manhattan Island, pointing to thousands of docu¬
ments concerning real estate in all parts of the city, will prove
very useful to all in quest of information in regard to real es¬
tate.

This first part of the Index contains the description of nearly
1400 maps on file, under certain numbers, in the Map Room of
the Register's Office. Of some large estates, there are several
maps filed under the same principal number, but distinguished by
certain marks or figures: T, 1, 2, 3, etc., or a, b, c, etc.
The names appearing with the description are, in most cases,
the names of owners at the time of survey of the property; in
some cases, the names of owners at the time of filing.
