REPORT.
 

To the Legislature :

The Commissioners of Emigration of the State of New York
respectfully present their annual report for the year ending De¬
cember Slst, 1883, the thirty-seventh since the establishment of the
commission.

At the annual meeting of the present Board held on the 20th
day of February, 1883, Commissioner Henry A. Hurlbut was
elected President, and the following standing committees were ap¬
pointed for the ensuing year, to-wit:

Castle Garden Committee — Charles N. Taintor (chairman),
--George Starr, Edmund Stephenson, George J. Forrest, Charles
Hauselt and the President.

Ward's Island Committee— George Starr (chairman) Chas. F.
Ulrich, Chas. N. Taintor, James Lynch, Chas. Hauselt and the
President.

Finance Committee — George J. Forrest (chairman), Edmund
Stephenson, Chas. F. Ulrich, James Lynch, the Mayor of the city
of New York and the President.

Tiie work of the commission is carried on under two general de¬
partments, known as the Emigrant Landing Department, at Castle
Garden, and the Hospital and Kefuge Department, at Ward's
Island, each of which is specially supervised by the respective com¬
mittees appointed by the President of the Board.
 

Landing Department.

During the year 1883 the number of passengers from foreign
ports that arrived at the port of New York was 454,124, of whom
405,909 were aliens, and 48,215 were citizens of the United States,
or had previously visited this country. The number ot* alien pas¬
sengers arriving annually at the port of New York since the
establishment of this commision in 1847 is as follows:
