Sir — I have the honor to submit to you the following report for
the year 1883:

The number of cases which were sent \o Ward's Island, as sick
and destitute, for the year ending 1883 was 4,289, comprising
various diseases, which Dr. Thomas has tabulated in his report.

The number of patients who were treated in the '' Tem¬
porary Hospital " for teruis varying from one day to one
week and then discharged cured„......................      340

The number of dispensary patients treated  and  who were

furnished medicines................................       .^20

The number of deaths that occurred in the Temporary Hos¬
pital during the year................................        40

The number of deaths at sea and brought to Castle Garden

for interment on Ward's Island-----..............«.. . .        29

The number deaths occurring in the emigrant boarding-
houses and transferred to Ward's Island for burial.......        13
