The members of the Publications Committee and the officers of
the Friends record here, with regret, the death of Melvin Loos
on January 2 of this year. From almost the beginning of the
publication of Columns, he was the guiding spirit in the overall
typographic planning and has been the gifted intermediary who
translated the Committee's intent and desires for each article
—text and illustrations—into the handsome printed pages. He
