Activities of the Friends
Bancroft Awards Dinner. The Friends sponsored the annual Ban¬
croft Awards Dinner which was held in the Rotunda of Low Me¬
morial Library on Thursday evening, April i. Dr. Gordon N.
Ray, Chairman of the Friends, presided. President AJichael I. Sov-
ern announced the winners of the 1982 awards for books published
in 1981 which a jury deemed of exceptional merit and distinction
in the fields of American history and diplomacy. Awards were
presented for the following; Edward Countryman, A People in
Revolution: The American Revolution and Political Society in
New York, n^o-i-j^o, published by the Johns Hopkins Univer¬
sity Press; and Alary P. Ryan, Cradle of the Middle Class: The
Family in Oneida County, New York, ijpo-iS6^, published by
the Cambridge University Press. The President presented to the
author of each book a $4,000 award from funds provided by the
Edgar A. and Frederic Bancroft Foundation; Dr. Ray presented
citations to the publishers.
Future Meetings. A'leetings of the Friends during 1982-83 have
been scheduled for the following dates; Fall meeting, Thursday
evening, November 4; Winter exhibition opening, Thursday af¬
ternoon, February 3; and Bancroft Awards Dinner, Thursday
evening, April 7.
