NEW YORK OF YESTERDAY
By Henry CoUins Brown
The City of New York as I knew it wlien a boy was
a vastly differeut place from what it is today. When we
kids took aii Eightli Aveniie car, going north of Fifty-
ninth Street, the conductor always said: "Keep yoiir
nickel, Johuny, it's so good to have a little company up
here, it's wortli the money." And no wonder! All
arotind us was a wilderue.ss of crags and bouklers. I^ittle
wooden shanties peeked out liere aud there from beliind
occasional level spaces among the rocks. A long stejD-
lackler was needed to reach some of these eerie dwelHngs.
