WASHINGTON IN NEW YORK
By WiUis HoUy
Sec'y to the Soeiety of Tammany
You have all heard that the object of the formation of
the Society of Tammany was to iiphold and support Gen-
eral Washington and President Washington against
aristocrats and aristocratic tendencies. I remember that
the lamented Sachem Lynn, who was so long our mentor,
guide and friend, as well as our inspiration, in matters
of patriotic moment, read such a meaning into the chron-
icles of the evolution of the Society of Tammany. He
held that it grew out of the activities of the Liberty Boys
and their popular demonstrations of anti-British senti-
ment.
