Stonington is the present-day improvement over the old-
time name of Deer Isle. It contains the aforesaid
granite for the aforesaid Court House. The Governor
Bodwell, a diminutive half-portion of a real ferryboat,
takes you from Rockland through the channels and around
the islands that dot the way to Stonington. It is about
21/2 hours sail, and should be most enjoyable; but like
all these economical eastern steamboats, they never pro-
vide a chair with a back. You either have to sit on a
child's size campstool or perch yourself on the wooden
seat that encircles the rail, and twist yourself into a com-
fortable position—if you can. With the exception of
the James T. Morse, from Rockland, I have yet to
