The retreats of youth are devious and sometimes mys-
terious. The whisperings of the glen, the shadow of the
mountain or the broken castle with its keep beneath the
pavement of the yard, stir adolescent instincts to go to
them or yearn for them. Among them, youthful com-
panions sport, while once a week Troy falls and Hector
is slain. I remember the last time his helmet spun about
the gravel walk. It was on the Prim place, not far from
the Gracie Mansion. There were no castles in YorkviIIe,
