VALENTINE'S MANUAL

"Pieter Claessen Wyckofif farmhouse on Canarsie Lane,
west of Ralph Avenue, Flatlands, was built in 1664. The
brick stones used for the chimney fireplace, etc, were
imported from HoUand, as were the white cedar shingles,
some of which may stiU be seen on the south side of the
old structure. In 1819, the overhang of the roof, on the
north side, was shortened, which extended far out and
within a few feet of the ground. The north and east
sides were at that time re-shingled and a few rooms were
plastered for the first time. The oak beams on the ceiling
of the dining room have assumed the color of walnut.
The shingled roof was overlaid with a tin roof."
