THE death only last year of an outstanding figure in
the theatres of the Eighties, that of Clara Morris,
brought back many memories of her early days with
Daly. What Ada Rehan was to comedy Clara Morris
was to tragedy.
She remained but a short time under Daly's manage¬
ment, a salary disagreement causing an early estrangement.
Her subsequent career carried her to most of our prin¬
cipal cities and she soon had an enthusiastic following
everywhere.
Her first appearance under Daly was September 13,
1870, in the exacting part of Anne Sylvester in the dra-
