In 1942, Lehman wanted to get involved in the war effort, and with the knowledge and approval
of President Roosevelt, he declined to run for a fifth term as governor. As Lehman contemplates
war work in Washington, a number of contenders seek to succeed him in the Governor's office.
Among his possible successors: Attorney General James J, Bennett, U,S. Senator James Mead,
New York State Democratic Chairman James A. Farley, and Republican Thomas Dewey.
