Yet in 412 Methymna, first of afi the towns of Lesbos, joined
the revolt of the afiies against Athens, viu. 22 fin. So capricious
was the popular feefing in Greek states. Cp. Arist. Pol. v. 4. 5, 6,
who gives a somewhat different account of the revolt of Mitylene.

before, 'yet even in this revolt,' which they actually made, as
opposed to that which they had only intended to make, ' they were
stifi unprepared.'

The first sentence-^rwi/ re ydp k.t.X.—explains why they wanted
to delay; the second, Tevibioi ydp, why they were compelled to
hurry; the second yap reverting to the main idea dvayKaaBivres be
Kal ravrqv rqv dndaraaiv npdrepov q bievoovvro noielaBai, and the WOrds
which intervene being parenthetical.
inipevov takes two constructions, a) the infinitive reXeaBqvai,
b) the accusative oaa 'ibei dcpiKiaBai.
