BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
William Muschenheim, (1902-1990), was a modernist architect in
New York in the 1930's. Muschenheim attended Williams College,
1919-21; Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1921-24; Behrens
Master School of Architecture, Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, Austria,
1925-29. He received the Behrens Prize in 1926, and taught at
the University of Michigan from 1950-1973.
His work includes major alterations to the Hotel Astor, NY; Marine
Transportation Building, 1939 New York World's Fair; S.R. Guggenheim
Museum for Non-Objective Art, 1939; and numerous alterations to
penthouses, apartment houses and private residences.
Muschenheim also worked for Peabody, Wilson & Brown, and Joseph
Urban.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The William Muschenheim Architectural Drawings and Papers span
1929-1957, with bulk dates 1931-1950. Muschenheim's papers document
130 separate jobs, and the visual material (described in RLIN
VIM) consists of 3081 sheets of drawings. The projects mainly
represent Muschenheim's work in New York City, but also include
work in Albany (NY), Amenia (NY), Bridgehampton (NY), Chappaqua
(NY), Hampton Bays (NY), Malverne (NY), Massapequa (NY), Nassau
Point (Long Island), Washington (CT), Washington DC, Westhampton
Beach (NY), and Woodstock (NY), among other locations.
William Muschenheim had numerous clients which included the following
family members: Carl Muschenheim, Elsa Muschenheim, and Frederick
A. Muschenheim. In addition to the many clients for whom Muschenheim
did alteration work, he also worked with a wide variety of companies.
Some of the companies include Bigelow Carpet Company, C.G. Flygare
Inc., Excel Metal Cabinet Co., Inc., F. Schumacher & Co., Famaes
Development, Hans Knoll, Howard & Schaffer, Inc., Kurt Versen
Lamps, Inc., Ledlin Light Designers, Portland Cement Association,
and Thonet Brothers, among many others.
ORGANIZATION AND ARRANGEMENT
Organization: The papers of William Muschenheim are organized
according to his original filing system in which he interfiled
the drawings, correspondence, specifications, and other papers
for each job. There are a total of 130 numbered jobs (with gaps
between jobs 11-17, 25-26, 28-29). Each job number may represent
more than one project. Each client received a single job number
no matter how many projects Muschenheim may have done for them.
Arrangement: Each job is numbered (1-130) and contains project
names, dates, number of sheets of drawings that were originally
housed with the papers, accession numbers, and folder level descriptions
of the papers.
The finding aid records the original order of both the architectural
drawings and their related papers, (i.e. correspondence, specifications,
accounts, etc.). The drawings have been removed from the original
files and stored and cataloged separately. The drawings are not
described in this finding aid except to list the number of drawings
under each project number, and their accession numbers. There
are a total of 3081 sheets and 149 RLIN VIM records. It is worth
noting that there are four projects for which there are no job
numbers but have drawings, (RLIN VIM records NYDA94-F26 through
NYDA94-F29).
An index of the drawings is also appended to the finding aid, with
a complete list of corresponding RLIN VIM record numbers, project
names, accession numbers, and locations.
Although the collection consists of a total of 30 boxes of archival
material, boxes 21-29 contain only file dividers. These file dividers
have been retained because they were written on by Muschenheim
and may contain information useful to the researcher. Box 30 contains
samples and is listed under job 79.
NOTES TO THE RESEARCHER
Job #: Muschenheim assigned each client a job number from
1 to 130. Each client received a single job number no matter how
many projects Muschenheim may have done for them. Many job numbers
contain more than one project because many of Muschenheim's clients
hired him to work on more than one residence, building, etc.
Project: The project titles under this heading were the
titles written on Muschenheim's original file folders. These titles
do not necessarily contain complete information regarding all
the projects for a given client. A list of all projects with complete
title information is given under the heading "accession numbers
and projects." (See below.)
Number of sheets: This heading represents the total number
of architectural drawings accessioned for a particular job number.
Please note that this number is the total amount of sheets for
all projects under a given job number, and that the item accessioned
is the sheet of paper, not the image(s) on it. For the number
of sheets of drawings per project please refer to the index.
Accession numbers and projects: Each sheet of paper containing
architectural drawings within a given project is assigned a single
accession number. The accession numbers for this collection are
used to record the order of drawings within a specific project.
The accession numbers begin with the number 1986.004.00001, with
the last five digits being numbered sequentially.
The project titles under this heading were supplied by the cataloger.
They contain the complete name and address of each project under
a given job number. The drawings are cataloged under these project
titles in RLIN VIM.
Folders: The folders have been numbered sequentially according
to the original order found in the Muschenheim files. After each
folder number is the job number, followed by a short description
of the folder contents. This version of the finding aid contains
only the folders that had archival material and does not include
the folder numbers for files that contained only drawings.
