Coats of arms were often employed as decorative ownership marks, in blind or in gold, on hand-tooled bindings of the pre-industrial era. In their search for status, publishers' gold-stamped bindings had recourse to "coat of arms" motifs, using them most frequently on books related to clubs, groups, and governmental organizations, as well as historical subjects.
