- "Le Club du Sahel: c'est un réseau informel mais structuré au sein duquel les donateurs et les administrations sahéliennes ont pris l'habitude de communiquer, afin d'augmenter l'efficacité de leurs actions communes. La fondation du Club fut entérinée par les hauts représentants des donateurs et, au même moment, par les ministres sahéliens réunis à Dakar en 1976. Dès lors que ce regroupement incluait tout aussi bien les donateurs que les Sahéliens eux-mêmes, on ne parla plus que du "Club du Sahel". La résolution portant création du Club prévoyait que celui-ci devrait sensibiliser la communauté internationale sur les besoins et les perspectives de développement du Sahel, et faciliter la mobilisation de ressources."

"IGAD is the new name of the Authority superseding the Intergovernmental Authority on Drought and Development (IGADD) which was created in 1986 by the six drought stricken countries of Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan and Uganda to co-ordinate development in the Horn of Africa. The State of Eritrea became the seventh member of IGADD in September 1993 after its independence."
