My research interests focus on eastern Africa and the Indian Ocean from
early times to the late nineteenth century, but I also am interested in
the intersection of politics and culture in the twentieth century. 
Precolonial trade, accompanying cultural and social currents, Islam,
women's history, and the African diaspora are my particular research and
teaching interests. 

I am currently completing a long simmering political economy of eastern
Tanzania in the nineteenth century while at the same time engaged in a
long term study of the African diaspora in the Indian Ocean.
