I established a web site on African Writing Systems in 1996 together with
Africana Library and I am now in the process of expanding the site by
incorporating various aspects of African Knowledge Systems, such as
Symbolic Arts (masks), Oral Arts (proverbs), Sartorial Arts (kente
Clothes), geological Arts (Gold weights, Bronze Works), Washa Arts (Cave
paintings and engravings), and Anatomical Arts (Body decorations and
marks).
My research focus is on African writing systems, particularly the
relevance of the systems in the interpretation and construction of African
histories. I am currently working on the history of Ancient Ethiopia.
The courses I am teaching include: Ancient History of Africa, Philosophy
of African History, Nile Valley Civilizations, and History and Politics of
Racialization.
I am the Co-President of The Ethiopian Research Council, an elected Board
member of NYASA and a Board member of AHSA.
