My research and teaching focuses on African economic development, the
alleviation of poverty, hunger and food insecurity, the intersection
between economic development and environmental protection, and related
international policies (e.g., concerning debt relief, structural
adjustment, and food aid). I have worked in all regions of the continent
and have coauthored (with Jeff Cason, Dept. of Political Science,
Middlebury College) a "practical guide to overseas research", forthcoming
in 1997 from the Johns Hopkins University Press.
Current research includes rice production in Ctte d'Ivoire, pastoralist
risk management in Ethiopia and Kenya, and asset and income
diversificationin those three countries and Rwanda.
