I work on Eastern African social and cultural history, with an emphasis on
the 19th and 20th centuries.  My research focuses on the construction of
ethnicity among the Taita of Kenya.  I also work on questions about
Christian evangelization and indigenous religion, and have an ongoing
interest in the development of colonial African "progressivism."
