I have written on the history of a 19th century Cape Town prison and on
the medical institutions on Robben Island in South Africa from 1846 to
1910 (Ph.D. thesis at University of Cambridge, 1994). More recently I have
been working on a history of the medical market at the Cape from 1760-1860
and on the history of climate and gardens in medical discourse with
particular reference to their role in settler identity.

I am interested in midwives, professionalization, indigenous medical
practice and the western-trained medical profession in colonies of the
19th and 20th centuries.
