Social historian of colonial Africa, with a specialization in Central and
Southern Africa. My teaching has included general surveys of Africa, a
course on southern Africa, and a course on colonial autobiographies. My
research has included a history of Lubumbashi, a spatial approach to the
differential effects of colonial rule in Zaire, Zambia, and Malawi,
comparison of mortality causes and levels in the copper and gold mines,
and a comparison of health care systems in the British empire. My current
project is a comparison of policies which have led to mortality reduction
from specific illnesses.
