He served as U.S.A.I.D's Regional Democracy and Governance Advisor for
Eastern and Southern Africa from 1993-1995. He has been co-founder and
first chair of the Comparative Democratization Section of the American
Political Science Association and is founder and current chair of the
African Politics Conference Group, affiliated with both the African
Studies Association and the American Political Science Association. He
has been a Jennings Randolph Senior Fellow at the U.S. Institute of Peace.
Professor Harbeson's books on Africa include:
