My speciality is Francophone Africa (including Zaire, where I served as a
Fulbright Exchange Professor). I have written a book on the intellectual
itinerary of former President Leopold Sedar Senghor of Senegal, and I am
currently in the process of producing a film version of Senghor's life.
My research recently has been focussed on the relationship between the
Negritude Movement of the l930's and the Afrocentric ideology of the
l990's. At the upcoming Annual Meeting of the African Studies Association
here in San Francisco I will be chairing a panel on "Teaching African
History by Using Historiographical Controversies" directed at professors
teaching undergraduates. I am also serving on the Local Arrangements
Committee for the ASA Annual Meeting to be held in November, l996.
