Dr. Kaiser.s work focuses on the political and economic transitions
currently underway in sub-Saharan Africa, with a particular emphasis on
East Africa. His special areas of interest include democratization, the
politics of identity, and the study of ethnic and religious conflicts. He
has received Fulbright funding and support from the International Peace
Academy, the United States Institute of Peace, and the Associational
Liaison Office for University Cooperation in Development to conduct field
research in Tanzania (including Zanzibar) and Burundi. In 1998, Dr. Kaiser
participated in a faculty and curriculum development seminar in Japan
funded by the Association of American Colleges and Universities.
