I teach African Political Economy, Middle East, Political Economy of
Development, and International Political Economy, as well as an
introductory course in international relations.
My main research/writing interests have been Africa since the mid-1960's,
but in 1988-91 each summer I spent time in Israel/Palestine, conducting
research on the Arab-Israeli conflict, the politics and political economy
of Israeli occupation and the peace process, and Palestinian labor and
trade unions.
On Africa, main focus for my field research has been West Africa,
primarily Ghana, secondarily Nigeria; lastly Cote d'Ivoire. I have
conducted field research in Ghana and/or Nigeria every year since 1991
except for 1992.
Structural adjustment in Ghana; Impact of structural adjustment upon
employment and trade unions political economy of trade union-state
relations in: (a) Ghana; (b) generally radical African states; (c) West
Africa; and, (d) Nigeria, the politics of democratization in Africa; In
general and more systematically in Ghana: the impact of trade union upon
democratization in Africa. On the latter subject, I am currently editing
a book, which should go to a publisher in summer 1997 on "Democratization
and Trade unions in Africa," with chapters on Nigeria, Ghana, Zambia,
Zimbabwe, South Africa, Namibia, Niger, and Senegal.
"Business Associations in the Political Economies of Ghana and Nigeria" is
the name of a chapter I am writing for a book on business associations in
Africa. Also, I am writing an analysis of the 1996 elections in Ghana.
