West Africa; Burkina Faso (Dagara, Birifor, Dyan, Lobi, Doghossie,
Teghessie, Dyula, Karaboro, Komono); Ghana (Dagara, Birifor, Sisaala); 
history (culture, political history); music (analysis, styles, history,
language-music relationship); xylophones; ritual; secret societies; 
surrogate languages (instrumental); orature; aurature; cross-world
communication.

Projects:

1) Comparative regional study of xylophone traditions of the Black Volta
region: distribution and historical development of styles, analysis of
musicized proverbs in xylophone performance (aurature), historical
development of xylophone clusters in West Africa.

2) Research project on the history and politics of mobile cults ('power
associations', 'secret societies') in south-western Burkina Faso and
adjacent areas in north-western Ghana.
