Main research on African family patterns and the care of dependents with
relation to the diaspora.  Concentration in East African history and
politics in terms of specifically African subjects.  

Teach courses on Classical Africa, Twentieth Century Africa, East African
Heritage, and lead a bienniel term abroad (next departure in fall 1998) to
Kenya with visits to Uganda and Tanzania. 

Very active in African music, having worked with the Kenyan National Music
Festivals for over ten years and continue to conduct African music
workshops in the U.S.  

Headed local rural harambee secondary school in western Kenya for eight
years (Shikokho Secondary, from 1980-88).
