Current research on Mende Verbal Art: all forms of oral performance From
historical narrative, riddle, song, proverbs and narrative. The Mende live
in the southern and eastern provinces of Sierra Leone, West Africa.
Taught all aspects of African Literature with special interest in the
development of the novel in Africa.
Research interests have included transposing Shakespeare's plays and
investigating how native recipients react to the message from their
distinctive worldviews; reassessing colonialist historical discourse on
Sierra Leone; reviewing psychological, social, and possible therapeutic
impact as revealed in the textual strategies of rumour mongering in Sierra
Leone; adult literacy programmes: from the medium of local languages to
official languages; and, several aspects of Sierra Leonean history and
settlement patterns.
