Paul Newman is regarded as the world's foremost authority on the Hausa
language. (Hausa Language: An Encyclopedic Reference Grammar. New Haven:
Yale University Press (2000).) He is also recognized as a leader in the
area of fieldwork methodology and practice. (With Martha Ratliff (eds.),
Linguistic Fieldwork. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press (2001).)  
PN's involvement in academic matters affecting northern Nigeria stretches
from 1961 to the present.
