West Africa, including West African Islamic history, and especially Hausa
studies, is my speciality. I have also published on South African and
Sudanese labor history, African culture in the U.S., historical
linguistics, African Studies in Japan, and other fields (see my website
below for further information). I am currently working on a number of
projects for publication, in the areas of methodology, interethnic and
interreligious relations, Islamization, and others.

I am especially interested in international collaboration in African studies,
and would very much like to help scholars who want to make contact with Japanese
Africanists, including those who may be interested in natural science in African
studies.

Recent publications include _Spurious Arabic: Hausa and Colonial Nigeria_ (2000:
University of Wisconsin (Madison) African Studies Center) and _Slave Elites in
the Middle East and Africa_ (jointly edited with Toru Miura) (2000: Kegan Paul
International)
