Prof. Akilagpa Sawyerr, a Fellow of the Ghana Academy of Arts and
Sciences, was educated at the Universities of Durham, London and
California at Berkeley, obtaining the degrees of LLB, LLM and J.S.D. He is
a Barrister at Law, Lincoln's Inn (UK), and Barrister at Law and Solicitor
of the Supreme Courts of Ghana and of Papua New Guinea.

Prof. Sawyerr, who is a Member of the United Nations Committee on
Development Policy, as well as a Director of the African Society of
International and Comparative Law, was President of the Council for the
Development of Social Science in Africa (CODESRIA) from 1995 to 1998.
Other positions held by Professor Sawyerr include that of Chief Negotiator
for the Government of Ghana, Ghana-Valco Negotiations (1983-1985 and
1988-90), and Corresponding Member of the Institute of International
Business Law and Practice. 

Prof. Sawyerr has been teaching Law since 1964. He held the positions of
Lecturer and Senior Lecturer in Law at the University of Dar es Salaam.

From 1964 to 1970, and Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor, and Professor
at the University of Ghana from 1970 to 1998.  He was a Professor of Law
at the University of Papua New Guinea from 1979 to 1984. 

From 1985-1992 Professor Sawyerr was Vice-Chancellor of the University of
Ghana.
