Research interests:
Labour and trade unionism in Sub Saharan Africa; more specifically: trade
unions and democratization (both at enterprise level and at national
level); trade union- state relations; trade unions and human resource
management (HRM); workers' participation and trade unions. A related
interest is workers' education & trade union training.
I have done fieldwork in Ghana, and more recently in Zimbabwe (in the
period 1986-1995) on the above themes, in cooperation with the Zimbabwe
Congress of Trade Unions - ZCTU. Other countries in whose trade union /
labour situation I am interested include: Zambia, Ghana, South Africa,
Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria.
Currently I am completing a study on Worker Representation and Trade
Unions in Zimbabwe, 1980-1995.
At the ISS, I lecture in labour relations in the MA (Development Studies)
Programme Employment & Labour Studies (ELS)
In addition, I am an executive member of the Netherlands African Studies
Association, the professional association of Africanists in the
Netherlands. "The Netherlands African Studies Association also maintains a
