Research:  (1) African languages, particularly descriptive and historical
studies of languages of the Chadic family of northeastern Nigeria,
northern Cameroon and western Chad.  (2) African music, particularly the
specifics of how linguistic text is matched to musical setting.  My
primary work in this area has been on Hausa music, but I have also worked
on Ewe music.

Teaching:  Hausa language at all levels at UCLA.  Development of
computer-aided instructional materials for African languages.  Publishing
African language materials on the World Wide Web.
