I am particularly interested in the social and environmental history of
southern Africa. My research focusses on the colonial period in Zimbabwe,
exploring changing methods of agricultural production, conflict between
the state and peasants, gender and generational dynamics, community
relations, and peasant understandings of historical change. I am working
on a book and several articles addressing these issues.

I teach a range of courses at the University of Alberta. These include the
African surveys, historical methods, slavery in Africa and the Atlantic
world, a new course in African religions, and world history.
