Director, Asia Program, Washington State University

My work has focused on East Africa: Swahili historiography, Arabic sources
for African history, history of East African geography and cartography,
and navigation in the Indian ocean. Currently my main teaching field is
Islamic civilization and Middle East history, but I advise a couple of
graduate students with an interest in African history. My recent
publications include:

THE PATE CHRONICLE (Michigan State University Press, 1993);

"Essays in Swahili Geographical Thought, I" in SWAHILI FORUM 2 (1995);

"Essays in Swahili Geographical Thought, II" in SWAHILI FORUM 3 (1996);

and four articles in the ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE,
TECHNOLOGY, AND MEDICINE IN NON-WESTERN CULTURES" (Kluwer Academic
Publishers, 1997):

"East and West: Africa in the Transmission of Knowledge from East to
West," "Environment and Nature: Africa," "Navigation in Africa," and
"Navigation in the Indian Ocean and Red Sea."
