My current research concerns are: a) environment and development in Durban
(South Africa) as a Fulbright-Hays Research Fellow in 1994-95 ; and, b)
socio-economic aspects of the ecological crisis of Lake Victoria.

(a) The Durban research concerns eight cases of negotiations between
communities, local authorities and government, and corporations over urban
environment issues in Inanda, Umlazi, Isipingo, Merebank, Wentworth
(Austerville), and the Bluff.

(b) The Program on the Lakes of East Africa includes a major study of the
human impacts on the freshwater resources of Lakes Victoria and Malawi and
the impacts of changes in those resources on the human users and owners.

Previously I have conducted research on social stratification and religion
in Zimbabwe and Zambia; urbanization and housing in Zambia; scholars and
U.S. foreign policy toward Africa.

Publications include: Negotiating Environment and Development in South
Africa: Communities, Companies, and Government in South Durban (1996),
