ACTIVITIES:

Private publishing consultant providing consultancy services to
publishers and academic institutions, in particular providing advisory
services and individual project management for publishers, research
institutes, and the book community in Africa and in other developing
countries.

Developed the Hans Zell Publishers imprint (part of Bowker-Saur/
Reed-Elsevier UK Ltd.) in a freelance capacity from 1980-1997.

CURRENT RESEARCH INTERESTS:

Publishing and book development in Africa, particularly scholarly
publishing and journal publishing. Improving worldwide access to
information; the Internet in Africa.

Conducted a series of workshops for African journal editors and
publishers.

PUBLICATIONS:

Articles: over 80 articles, reports, and review essays on various
aspects of publishing and book development in Africa. 

Books published include: A Reader's Guide to African Literature, African
Books in Print/Livres Africains Disponibles, 2nd edition (2000), and The
African Book World & Press: A Directory/Repertoire du Livre et de la
Presse en Afrique (all of which have appeared in several editions);
Publishing and Book Development in Sub-Saharan Africa: An Annotated
Bibliography (1996, with Cecile Lomer) The African Studies Companion: A
