Comparative study of empires--state formation and centralization in early 
17th century Ottoman Empire in comparisonwith China and Russia. Book 
published on this topic: Bandits and Bureacrats: the Ottoman Route to 
State Centralization, Cornell UP 1994.  
New project--comparative on the decline of empires and the rise of 
nationalism-comparisons focused on Ottoman, Habsburg and Russian declines 
with an eye to Soviet events.  Also focus on applying theories of state 
and nation-formation to successor states.
