Currently (1997) working on a linguistic and theological analysis of
early Arabic texts of the Book of Job, as translated by Arabic-speaking
Jews, Christians, and Muslims before 1000 C.E., relating them to
predecessor texts in Hebrew, Aramaic, Syriac, and Greek.
Primary teaching duties include Standard Arabic at first,
second and third year levels; secondarily, offerings in modern Arabic
prose and poetry, and an introductory course on Islam, as well as
directed readings in Shi`ite thought, are occasional, supplementary
duties. (I am the only Arabic language teacher at Trinity, and am
considered part-time).
Previously taught courses (at Hartford Seminary) include
linguistic and theological analysis of the Qur'an and various Hadith
in the original language. At the Seminary I also catalogued the 1700+
Arabic language manuscripts in the Library, and logged them in a data
base for retrieval by author, title, and subject areas; a set of detailed
annotations to the catalogue was about half complete when the project was
suspended.
