Work Description:
My current dissertation focuses on contemporary Arab Muslim perceptions of
religions other than Islam. Therefore, my general interests are: Islam in
the Arab world or the Middle East in the modern and contemporary period;
methodology in islamic studies and the history of religion or religions;
the philosophy of self and Other representation. In addition,
Christian-Muslim, Jewish-Christian-Muslim, Jewish-Muslim,
Islamo-Jewish,and Islamo-Christian dialogue (any direction of
inter-religious dialogue) are all forms of conversations shaping
perceptions of the Other in a so-called new world order of identity
politics where the discourse on post-colonialism and post-orientalism confronts that of various forms of
fundamentalism, from secularism to neo-liberalism passing by religious and
ethnic traditionalism.
Teaching interests: introduction to Islam and religion in
general; Islamic liberation theology; modernist Islam around the world;
Malaysian and Indonesian Islam; Islamic institutions of education,
especially higher education; the israeli-arab-palestinian conflict in
