DESCRIPTION OF YOUR WORK

Since my recent retirement from the chair of Persian at Leiden 
University my teaching is restricted to supervising PhD research. The 
emphasis of my own research is on classical Persian literature, in 
particular the rise and development of Sufi poetry. Most important 
publication: Of Piety and Poetry. The Interaction of Religion and 
Literature in the Life and  Works of Hakim Sana'i of Ghazna (Leiden 
1983). Recent articles deal with: Qalandar poetry, Persian metrics, 
the use of narrative in didactical poetry, Persian pen names, H.Ethe 
as a historian of Persian literature. Several contributions to the 
Encyclopaedia of Islam and the Encyclopaedia Iranica.
Other scholarly interests are: the history of Persian studies 
in the West, iconography of Persian miniatures and the translation 
of Persian literary works into Dutch.
