Work/research area:

My present work concerns the Turkish community and military of the
third/ninth century 'Abbasid capital, Samarra. I am researching the
socio-political history of the Turkish community and studying the
relationship of this group of Turks to the Mamluk ("slave military")
system of medieval Islamic society. My intent is to contribute to the
study of the 'Abbasid caliphate; the history of the third/ninth century
Islamic world, the interaction of the Islamic Empire with the Central
Asian steppe; and the initial phases in the involvement of Turkic peoples
and cultures in the growth of Islamic civilization.
