I research the Hasidic community in metropolitan New York and the city
of Jerusalem. In particular I examine the spatial culture of the Hasidic
polity, and the ethical implications of policies aimed at preserving the
territorial integrity of separate ethnic groups. I argue that the Hasidic
polity ought to be viewed as the urban equivalent of intentional
communities. In particular, territorial policies, the politics of
difference and multi-culturalism, come to the fore in the study of the
Hasidic society. In light of the continuum ethnicity-culture-territory,
ethical issues of great import emerge in the field of urbanism.
