My main research concerns the archaeology and history of Roman North
Africa and the Levant, with recent field projects in Tunisia
(Leptiminus, a port city), Libya (The UNESCO Libyan Valleys
Archaeological survey of the predesert; Fezzan: the territory of the
Garamantes tribe in the northern Sahara) and Jordan (the Wadi Faynan
pre-desert mining and farming landscapes). I have particular interests
in landscape archaeology, rural settlement patterns, arid zone farming
technology, olive oil production and trade, the nature of Roman
imperialism (with post-colonial perspectives). I am currently Chairman
of the British-based Society for Libyan Studies.
